Parkes has a strong commercial and industrial base and is home to the largest copper and gold mine in NSW. The wool industry is also a major employer here and the district, a major wheat-storage centre, also produces other crops, and livestock. But the one feature that has made the town famous around the world is the big-dish antenna radio telescope just North of Parkes - the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
