The Snowy Mountains Scheme, commenced in 1949, saw workmen from some 27 Nations worldwide living in around 120 camps dotted throughout Cooma and the region. Nowadays, of course, the town is the starting point for many a skiing enthusiast hitting the slopes.
Cooma is 1 ½ hours’ drive south from Canberra. Nearby townships include Jindabyne and Berridale.
When the Southern Cloud aircraft crashed in the Snowy Mountains in 1931, killing eight people, it was Australia’s first major air disaster. Such is the difficulty of the terrain, that the wreckage wasn’t found until 27 years later, in 1958.
