Bermagui NSW NSW South Coast

The fishing port town of Bermagui likely derives its name from the word ‘permageua’, a word of unknown meaning used by the original indigenous inhabitants of the area. Popular with fisherman in search of Marlin and yellowfin tuna, the town also supports the vibrant dairying and timber industries.

The town of Tilba is just a few kilometres away.

Did you know?

Not far from Bermagui is the aptly named ‘Mystery Bay’ that conceals the fate of geologist Lamont Young who disappeared with four companions travelling by boat in the area in 1880 (the inspiration for Arthur Upfield’s 1960 novel, The Mystery of Swordfish Reef). Their boat was found with bags of their clothes, traces of vomit, a bullet hole but no bodies.
