Batemans Bay NSW NSW South Coast

Batemans Bay is proud to be among the list of places along the Australian east coast named by Captain James Cook (after Nathaniel Bateman, Captain of HMS Northumberland).

As the closest seaside town to Canberra, Batemans Bay unsurprisingly attracts many of its tourists from the nation’s capital and the majority of the businesses in town are dedicated to the tourism market. The town also supports a sawmill and is famous for its oysters, with oyster farming having commenced as early as 1860.

Nearby townships

Among the many small coastal towns of the Eurobodalla Shire, neighbouring Batemans Bay to the south you’ll find Surf Beach, Catalina, Batehaven, Broulee, Mossey Point and Malua Bay.

Did you know?

Batemans Bay was one of few areas on Australia’s east coast to face an immediate threat during the Second World War when, in 1942, a trawler was attacked by a Japanese submarine between Batemans Bay and Moruya.
