A town that boomed in the gold rush, Adelong boasts a tranquil rural charm, set on the banks of the Adelong River. It’s still a good spot for the hobby gold panner to try their luck!
The town is littered with reminders of its gold digging past. Check out the ruins of Richie’s Gold Battery, a well preserved quartz crushing and gold saving installation which once ranked foremost of any in Australia.
Adelong is located 416 km south-west of Sydney via the Hume and Snowy Mountains Highways. It is west of Tumut and South of Gundagai.
Adelong’s population swelled to an estimated 20,000 during the 1860’s and the heady days of the gold rush. The population these days is a much more comfortable 900.
