Officially named Yarralumla in 1834 after the local Ngunnawal Indigenous Australian name for the area, the suburb is home to the Canberra Yacht Club and offers ready access to swimming and rowing facilities on Lake Burley Griffin. Extensive foreshore parklands provide the ideal backdrop for a weekend stroll or picnic.
Other suburbs in the Inner South area include Barton, Deakin, Forrest, Griffith, Kingston, Parkes and Red Hill.
In 1917 a narrow gauge goods railway line ran from the Yarralumla Brickworks to some of the major building sites in central Canberra, transporting bricks. This linked the brickworks to places like Old Parliament House, and the Kingston Power House.
