Fyshwick ACT

Fyshwick was named after Sir Philip Fysh, a Tasmanian politician who assisted in bringing about Australia's Federation. The suffix "wick", from Old English, means "dwelling place" - and, by extension, "village" or "district". As Canberra’s largest industrial area, it is fitting that the streets of Fyshwick are named after Australia’s industrial towns such as Mt Isa, Newcastle and Townsville.

Nearby suburbs

Fyshwick is Canberra’s most eastern area and is neighboured by Symonston, Narrabundah, Kingston and Pialligo.

Did you know?

In 1918 A German Prisoner of War Camp was built between the railway line and Canberra Avenue. The prisoners never arrived and the camp was eventually converted to house labourers building the new Capital. The buildings were eventually sold off. But the roads used to service the camp became the orginal streets of Fyshwick.
