Calwell ACT

Calwell is named after Labor politician, and one time leader of the party, Arthur Calwell. A relatively new suburb, the name was gazetted in 1975 and the streets are named along a theme of Victorian politicians.

Calwell adjoins the suburbs of Theodore to the south, Richardson and Isabella Plains to the north.

Did you know?

Calwell’s namesake, Federal Parliamentarian Arthur Calwell, is one of only a few politicians in Australian history to be the victim of and assassination attempt. On the night of 21 June 1966, after addressing a rowdy meeting at Mosman Town Hall in Sydney, 19-year-old factory worker Peter Raymond Kocan discharged a sawn-off rifle immediately after Calwell entered his car, wounding him in the jaw.
