Banks ACT

Named in honour of the most famous botanist in Australian history, Sir Joseph Banks, this suburb marks the most southerly point of Canberra.

Not much further south is the small township of Tharwa. A favourite for weekend day trips, the area is home to the historic Lanyon and Cuppacumbalong Homesteads and the Nolan Gallery.

Nearby suburbs

Other suburbs in the area include Conder, Theodore and Gordon.

Did you know?

During the bushfires that ravaged the ACT in January 2003, staff and friends of the Nolan Gallery hurriedly collected the valuable artworks into the boots of their cars as the flames approached from nearby Namadgi National Park. Luckily the gallery was spared.
